The power of 10

The Brighton Marathon came and went last month, and it’s pretty safe to say I’ve been on a bit of a runners’ high ever since. There’s something about crossing the finish line of a race distance that had previously seemed damn-near unobtainable, in the sunshine, to the cheers of the crowds (oh yes, and next to the seaside!) that makes you feel pretty good about yourself, running and, well, life in general. As I happily ate my fish & chips on the beach with my friends and family afterwards, I told myself I deserved a week off running, to let my legs and feet recover from their 26.2-mile adventure. The trouble is, that was a while ago now. OK, so I’ve gone out for the odd 5K jog, but I’m still nowhere near back into anything you might call my normal running routine. I counted the days off on my fingers and it seems my little week off from my running routine has turned into a whole month. Oops. That’s the trouble with having the phrase ‘But I’ve just run a marathon’ as a fallback – I’ve kept falling back on it. That’s not to say I’ve been inactive for a month – I’m falling in love with yoga in a big way and I’ve just come back from a weekend cycling in the New Forest – but I’ve now realised I’m starting to miss my running, so it’s time to get back out there.Of course, the best way to add a little motivation to your training routine is to have a goal to aim for. So with that in mind, I’ve entered the Bupa London 10,000 on 30 May. I love 10Ks, so it’s the perfect race for me. Now I just have to get enough training in over the next few weeks to do it justice!
