WANTED: Unmotivated runners who need help getting off their butt!!

  • Posted:
Girls, I need some help. After plenty of experience with adventure racing and events up to 10km, I have had time off over the past 8 weeks with overload at work (commonly 12 hour days), lack of sleep and unhealthy eating patterns.
Thus, I have put on weight, am lacking in motivation and what used to be a comfortable 10km non-stop run is now a painful and depressing exercise. Unfortunately, the fit friends I have are either too fast, not runners or just as unmotivated, and joining a running club doesnt really suit my situation at the moment!
What I need is a fellow runner to push me and make sure I am getting out and fulfilling my promise to myself to both run the equivalent of Sydney to Melbourne (about 780km) during the year plus complete a half marathon in September, preferably under 2 hours.
As this is a remote situation (I am in Sydney!) in return, I would be happy to do likewise for you and maybe we can both meet our goals, perhaps map how far we can run between now and the end of the year?
Love to hear from those as desperate as me!!

    Hi
I read your post the other day and thought I'd leave it to see if anyone else replied. At the time I was so lacking in motivation I couldn't be bothered to even think about it. I'm more spurred on now and can feel the motivation spreading back into my bones! Lets go for it, if you're still up for it. Sounds a great challenge that you've set yourself. Message me. I'm also doing a half marathon in September, would love to do it in under 2 hours, just don't think I've got it in me now, age has crept up. Hope to hear from you xx

    Hi guys :)
Well, in not replying until now at least I'm proving I'm unmotivated (lol!) Maybe it's because over on this side of the world we are now in the depths of winter but it hasnt gotten any easier! I am going back to PT starting next week and I am scared, very scared and a bit embaressed (my PT is actually a good friend so at least he will cut me some slack (I hope!) Somehow I need to drag myself out this weekend to do something other than walking! Thinking at the moment that I might do a couple of long cycles to get my body used to being active! Hope you are all finding time for yourselves, even if you arent running I have learnt that being able to do things for YOU is sometimes more important and will help get the drive back to run again!

Hi, I'd love to team up with you. I have a half marathon coming up in September too an I am struggling to find the required motivation. My last half marathon was 1 hour 58 but I was running with someone so I'm not confident I can do it on my own. Perhaps we could help each other, could be fun. Hope to hear from you.

Well I have NO 1/2 marathons or anything heavier than a 10k in October BUT BUT BUT I am so perky and annoyingly motivated I can help if you wanna, plus I went to Aus and Sydney a few years ago (stayed in paramata and blue mountains) so any chance to reflect on vert happy memories is a good one!

How far are you training a week on average? Mines about 15-20k on a good week???

Ok - I have had disasterous weeks over the past month or so to the point where I have been so exhausted on a WALK that my husband has had to walk back home to get the car to pick me up. Epic Fail.
So now I need to do this. While I still dont know how much confidence I have in this half in September I will forever regret it if I dont try.
Starting again this week I am back training with my PT, who hasnt seen me in the gym for around 3 months now (!!) and starting to run again, even just for 20 minutes on the treaadmill would be a wonderful start! Yes, I know that to train for a half really means that right now I should be doing around 50km per week but that's just not reasonable (yet!)
Let's do it girls - every little 10 minutes of running counts ... I will report in again in a few days with what I have managed :)

    Wel done bunnysone...

I am proud of myself this week. I have got my mojo back i think... Ive decided to run little and often so i have been running / walking a mile at a faster pace than normal on a morning (i want to improve my speed). I've decided once i've reached this small goal of running a mile with no walking at a good pace then i can then increase my distance and mix my running with swimming (once my cosy comes thru the post!).

I'm not a morning person so to say i have got up the last 2 mornings at 6am and made myself go running is great! I am proud of myself just for doing that...

I've also been going with my mum whose aim is to lose 3 stone. Atm she is walking round while i run but she says its encouraging her to walk as fast as possible. Which i personally think is great.

I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's tips in this forum they have definately made me get into gear!

Hi everyone, I joined the site yesterday and came across your thread. I am also very lacking in motivation at the moment and would love to team up with you. I am doing a HM in mid-October so this will be ideal. It's not one I've done before and I don't know if it will be a PB as it's fairly undulating and my PB was on a flat course, but we shall see. I am doing a gym session this evening but will try and get myself out the door running tomorrow....

    Hi All!
I managed 5km on a treadmill the other night non-stop in 31.5minutes, which is pretty good considering ive had almost 2 months off - so if I can do it we can ALL do this!!!
It's the first day of the new financial year today, so how about we all make a pact of how much we want to run this month and see if we can stick to it? I think I can comfortably manage 15km a week, so I am nominating 60km for the month. It's not really that much but I dont want to set a goal that I am never going to make!
How about the rest of you? Are you game to nominate a monthly/weekly mileage and then stay in contact to see it through? We can all do this!!

    I'm up for this...

I am an extremely unmotivated runner at the moment (to the point I'm sitting in my running gear, but never made it out the door this evening!)

No HR planned, but I have a 5k RfL in three weeks, followed by a 10k in August, another 5k in September and a 15k in November. At the moment I can't even run 2 miles, but I really want to run the whole 10k (but I am really not holding my breath on that one...)

I'm going to try and do about 40k a month... That's my aim, anyway...

Well, depsite my good intentions on Thursday of going out, well I did go out but unfortunately not for a run. I went for a curry and a few glasses of wine instead! However, I did have a particularly hard session with my PT yesterday morning at 8am which I think made up for it as I can feel it it my legs and bum this morning.
I did manage to get ou for a run this morning and did 3.25 miles in 30 minutes 10 seconds. I am aiming to do a longer one tomorrow which is about 5.75 miles and one I've done many times before but not recently. It has a huge hill which will be hard I think as I haven't done it for a while.

Hello everyone, just thought I'd drop a line to see how everyone got on the first week? I went for my first run with the Women's Running Network on Wednesday and had a fantastic time, can't remember when I had such a good run as normally I run on my own. It was a great motivator.
    How is everyone else?

Hi girls - great to see you had a great run Shelley!

I struggled with my first week, since it is difficult to get out on the road during the day for me I have been treadmilling it for the last couple of weeks, with mixed results, anything from 4km to 5km over an hour stopping and starting which is absolutely hopeless.
HOWEVER, last night I finally completed something reportable! I managed 10km on the treadmill in 57.5 minutes, non stop, even including a 2minute run at level 14.5km/hour in the middle!! And, this is backing up from a 25km mountainbike ride on Sunday! Last night I was completely depleted, so I know I did something positive for my body towards training!. I hope (pray!) that this is the start of a comeback - we'll see how the body copes with the rest of the week - corrective PT session tonight too!
Looking forward to hearing how you are going - maybe we can keep the dream of a hm in september alive!

    Hey Madsue :)
    Well done on another 5km!!

Treadmill running secrets? Ha - you know what they say about giving up secrets!! But my plan is simple:
    1) plug into some really good paced pumped up music (I am a massive Green Day fan which is perfect, but Foo Fighters is also brilliant, and Aerosmith and AC/DC occasionally) Try to run to the music where you can, allowing yourself to slow a little in the slower tracks.
    2) give yourself some variation! Up the tempo on the treadmill - I do short bursts at a fast pace and then drop it back to just under my normal running speed to recover (trying not to drop to a walking speed at all) then back to my normal pace. It's a great tactic to "up the anti" during the chorus of songs I find as it is just the right amount of time for a 20 - 30 second sprint. Plus it averages out your time to be faster in the end by adding sprints ;).
    3) dont sit there and watch the distance/time on the treadmill! Find something else to watch and sing along to the music in your head. If you are watching the time and distance it will go AMAZINGLY SLOWLY and you will end up just finding it all too difficult!
    4) challenge yourself. If you feel good, run past the 5km mark and go for another km, or to the next 2 minute interval even. THAT'S when you start watching the time and counting down how far you have to go!
    5) DONT BE AFRAID OF SPRINTS!! Remember YOU are setting the pace to the level you go to, YOU are deciding how long and YOU are deciding whether to walk at the end to recover or just drop the run back down to a slower run. Nobody is judging you on how well/fast/long you run except you. Sprint intervals are THE BEST way to increase cardio fitness, burn fat quickly and get to the end of a distance run!
    6) IT WILL GET EASIER! Sometimes I have a really crap run, the somehow the next day do a personal best to back it up. Can't explain it but it makes me happy when it happens :)
Good luck with your running! And if you are treadmill running try and put the gradient at 1 as it simulates outdoor running a bit better :)

Good luck with your running! And if you are treadmill running try and put the gradient at 1 as it simulates outdoor running a bit better :)

Bunnysone - well done on doing 10k on the treadmill, that is fantastic! We all know how hard a treadmill is, it all seems to take twice as long as running outside!

Madsue - congratulations on your runs, you seem to be getting out quite a bit which is great. Bunnysone in right on the treadmills - they can be very boring and difficult to finish if you're just watching the time. I use an ipod to help while away the time and as she said, varying the speeds and gradients will also make it more interesting and make the time go much faster.

I'm off to a pilates class this afternoon (first time ever but I really need to improve my flexibility, I am so stiff!!) and then out with the Run in England group this evening.

    Happy running!

    Hey Longpod and all,
Running is at a standstill here i'm afraid.
I've managed to develop a level 1 sciatica injury which means I am out for a while and just doing LOTS of stretching and corrective exercises. Yesterday I was supposed to compete in a 50km mountainbike ride, and it looks like I wont even be able to ride for another 4 months. Half marathon in September is gone :(
BUT - there's always next year - apparently if I keep the stretching up (I'm aiming for an hour a day at the moment) I can actually recover from this, instead of keeping it something that will affect me for the rest of my life!! There's not going to be anything stopping me for the next World Masters in 2013 in Italy - hopefully I will see some of you there!! :)

I can't believe how unmotivated I feel at the moment. I keep making excuses not to go out. I think part of the problem now is that I can't really run until the evenings when my husband is home to look after our little one by which time I feel tired and not really like going for a run but I know once I get out I will be ok. I used to run in the afternoon with our dog but that can't happen at the moment. Do you think I could come up with anymore excuses? I really must get my butt into gear and just go this evening.

    Hey there,

Bad luck with the injury, I've been off for a few weeks and have been SO frustrated, I just cant tell you. Keep it up with the stretches and I had a couple of sports massage too, not sure it is use to you but sure as hell worked for me.

And yeah, I have a toddler too and hate HATE running at the end of the day, you're battered looking after the little one all day aren't you. BUT no excuses, try it for just 20 mins tomorrow night, you'll feel so much more positive or do what I do and go v early mornings and weekend - it is horrible getting up early but you feel so smug all day its worth it lol
