Grete Waitz

In the June issue of Women’s Running (on sale now), we have paid tribute to 12 of running’s most remarkable women – women who have shown incredible strength and determination to achieve amazing feats. Grete Waitz is one of the women we have showcased, due to her staggering achievements in the Seventies and Eighties (among many other victories, Grete won the New York City Marathon nine times, breaking the world record three times).Sadly, Grete passed away on 19 April 2011, following a six-year battle with cancer. We had unfortunately already gone to press with the magazine at this time, so we were unable to express our sorrow at her death in the magazine. She was a remarkable woman, athlete and role model and will always be remembered as one of running’s great champions.
