Mind over matter

Got a race coming up soon? Keep a positive frame of mind with these race tips from personal trainer Graeme Hilditch:

Whether you are anxious about being able to finish your next race or its looking borderline whether you’ll finish in your target time, here are a few tips to help you keep a positive mind set:

Focus on what you can control

In the build up to the next race, its common for runners to start panicking about things outside of their control, such as a force 10 gale and horizontal rainfall all the way round, or worrying that that pesky knee niggle will rear its ugly head after half way. Some things you can’t control, so develop a positive mind set on the things you can, such as eating properly before the race, racing at the pace you know you can run, and giving the event your all. This way, you’ll be brimming with confidence when the gun goes.Mind over matter

It’s your race

Remember, it’s your race. Whatever happens, you are doing this race for yourself so as long as you give it 100% the outcome or time you finish in is immaterial.

Think positive thoughts

Whatever your aspirations for your race, every runner have their “demons” which often come calling just before race day. Try and block out any negative thoughts, no matter how badly you think training has gone, and instead focus on the positives of which there will be many. Positive thoughts almost always produce positive outcomes, so slap those demons away and believe in yourself.
