Rhalou tackles Glencoe, gale force winds and a big bang in Berlin

Friday, 9 December, 2011

Having survived my first ultra marathon in Glencoe last weekend, I’d really like to write about my epic adventures trail running in the snow. But alas I have a column and a race report scheduled to go in the January issue of Women's Running magazine and I don’t want to spoil it, so you'll have to settle for the highlights. The Yamaa Trust Winter Ultra was tough, it was cold, it was windy, it was snowy, and it took me all damn day, but I loved every minute of it. Rhal Glencoe Rhalou runs the West Highland Way ninja stylieGlencoe was the most stunningly beautiful terrain I’ve ever been lucky enough to run in and the weekend was a truly mind-altering experience. By the time we made it home I was so soaking even my thermals were wet, but I never stopped smiling. I can’t quite believe I managed to run (and walk, and maybe crawl a bit) over mountains for 28 miles in gale force winds and snow, and survive to tell the tale. I feel invincible! I couldn’t have done it without my personal mountain goat Sherpa Marko Lyons. He was patient, kind, funny, generous, and he looked after me incredibly well. Marko stuck with me the entire way, despite being able to run much faster, and when my socks were wet through and my legs were ready to give up, he kept me going with tales of his many ultra adventures. I’m a very lucky girl. You can read his side of the story here.Team Bangs on the Run Team Badass!Meanwhile back on the ranch, I’ve been busy preparing for an entirely different kind of race. I’m delighted to announce that I’ve been picked to run in a team for the Berlin Half Marathon next April by my gorgeous friend Muireann Carey-Campbell AKA Bangs and a Bun and so, along with seven other badass chicks, we’re off to Berlin to run our asses off! Read all about it here.Team Bangs on the Run jump The electric current installed in the pavement was a good incentive to start runningMost of the girls are complete beginners, so stay tuned to follow their amazing progress as they prepare for race day. I remember only too well how daunting it was when I approached my first half marathon and I’m really excited to be sharing the experience with them. Judging by how much fun we had on our first photoshoot before we’d even started training, I just know it’s going to be one hell of a journey and I can’t wait to get started.
