Sports Tours International Competition
Cheerleader spirit wins local runner dream ticket to Big Apple
Words: Carys CrossAn account manager from Maidenhead, Berkshire who started running after watching the film Run, Fat Boy Run, has won the chance to compete in the New York Marathon, courtesy of an entertaining anecdote from her past. After entering a competition hosted by Women’s Running magazine in association with Sports Tours International, former star marathon runner Ron Hill chose Adele’s entry as the story of success.
A regular commuter, Adele, 32, was familiar with passing charity-collectors on the London Underground. Inspired by this, Adele and a friend dressed in cheerleader outfits and yellow tights, and took to the underground stage at London Paddington, inviting attention to both themselves and commuters’ wallets. ‘I just wanted to stand out’ says Adele. ‘A friend suggested we raise money wearing the cheerleading costumers which matched the colours of my chosen charity.’
Training up to three times a week and having recently taken part in this year’s London Marathon, Adele is no stranger to race day. Finishing in four hours and 45 minutes, and raising a whopping £6,000 for charity, she found herself beating her target by £3,000. Come this winter, Adele will take her running streak to New York for three nights, with her trip ending in the big race on Sunday 7th November. She will be raising money for Whizz-kidz, a charity dedicated to enabling disabled children to lead more independent lives.
‘It has been my dream for some time now to run in both the London and New York Marathons. I can’t believe I am going to run both in the same year!’ says Adele. Sports Tours Head of Operations, Brendan Fox says, ‘We are delighted to have such a worthy winner for our New York Marathon competition. We look forward to seeing Adele run there and raise money for Whizz-kidz.’
